167 W hen my husband Stanley and I opened our fi rst hotel in Johannesburg together, we were young newly-weds and I had no experience of hospitality. I learned everything about running a successful hotel from him and through my own hard work, trial and error, driven by a desire to create wonderful experiences and lasting memories for our guests. What an amazing journey it has been. I never imagined that more than six decades later, I would be presiding over 17 glorious boutique hotels and twelve one-of-a-kind luxury river cruise ships, which over the years have accrued so many awards, accolades and, most importantly, loyal guests. I am actively involved in every part of Red Carnation Hotels and Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, but my particular passions are for interior design and food. I taught myself to cook on-the-job back in the hotel kitchens in South Africa, and am proud that to this day some of my own recipes are amongst the most popular dishes on our menus. I also wanted our properties to stand out from the crowd which is why no two bedrooms or public spaces within our hotels or river cruise ships are the same, each one fi lled with carefully sourced antique pieces, exquisite fabrics, bespoke carpets and original artwork. Across the collections, our philosophy towards guest service is the same – no request too large, no detail too small – which allows us to deliver something highly personalised and unique to each guest. We have the most beautiful interiors, the tastiest dishes and the most comfortable beds in the best locations, but what really keeps our guests coming back time and time again is that they are treated as valued individuals. I read every single guest comment we receive, and above all it is our staff and their attention to detail and thoughtful touches that ensure every stay exceeds expectations. "No request too large, no detail too small" We are all part of the same family, and I know that same guest-centric approach is intrinsic to Luxury Gold Vacations and our Travelling Concierges.
